Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors

Tacrolimus (0.03%, 0.1%) ointment and pimecrolimus (1%) cream are non-steroidal immunomodulating macrolactams. They inhibit the production and release of IL-2 and subsequent T-cell activation and proliferation, by blocking the enzyme calcineurin. Their off label use in pediatric psoriasis is safe and effective especially for thin lesions in areas prone to atrophy or steroid acne, such as face, flexures, intertriginous and anogenital region.
